يعتبر كتاب مدخل إلى فهم تسوية الصراعات، أحد أبرز الكتب النظرية التي تناولت الصراعات الدولية، متناولاً قضية تسوية الصراعات تحديداً، بعكس الكتب الأخرى التي تركز على فهم أسباب الصراع.
ويتناول بعداً محورياً في تعريفه للصراعات، وهو التركيز على وجود "قضية خلافية" بين الأطراف المتصارعة، مفرقاً بين ما يُعتبر عنفاً سياسياً وغير سياسي من وجهة نظر القاموس السياسي.
كما يتناول الكتاب ثلاثة أنماط تحليلية في عملية تسوية الصراعات، وهي المنظور الديناميكي، التركيز على الحاجات الأساسية، والحسابات المنطقية.
ويتوصل إلى نموذج مقترح في عملية تسوية الصراعات مع تطبيقات على حالات متعددة.
أما الجزء الأخير من الكتاب، فيركز على قضايا معقدة في عملية تحليل الصراعات، كالصراعات الإقليمية، ومواقف الدول العظمى وتدخلاتها، ويعتمد استراتيجيتين متناقضتين في عملية تفكيك الصراعات الإقليمية المتداخلة.
ويضيف المؤلف إلى النسخة العربية ملحقاً بالتحديات التي تواجه عملية تسوية الصراعات، والتهديدات الجديدة التي لا يسهل ربطها ببعضها، ويقدم أسلوباً نقاشياً مترابطاً بمضمون بقية الكتاب.
