يعتبر كتاب "مدخل إلى فهم تسوية الصراعات" لــ "بيتر فالنستين"، أحد أبرز الكتب النظرية التي تناولت الصراعات الدولية، متناولاً قضية تسوية الصراعات تحديداً، بعكس الكتب الأخرى التي تركز على فهم أسباب الصراع.
ويستند الكتاب، في المقام الأول، على "مشروع جامعة أبسالا لبيانات الصراعات"، الذي أعده مركز دراسات السلام والصراعات في جامعة أبسالا في السويد، إضافة إلى مشروع "الحروب والصراعات المسلحة" التابع لجامعة هامبورج في ألمانيا، ومشروع "الحروب ومسبباتها" الذي تشرف عليه جامعة ميتشيجان في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية.
ويتناول الكتاب بعداً محورياً في تعريفه للصراعات، وهو التركيز على وجود "قضية خلافية" بين الأطراف المتصارعة . بالإضافة إلى تناوله ثلاثة أنماط تحليلية في عملية تسوية الصراعات، وينتهي "فالنستين" بالتوصل إلى نموذج مقترح في عملية تسوية الصراعات يدمج فيه النماذج الثلاثة ،كما يبلور المؤلف سبع طرق رئيسية يمكن من للأطراف من خلالها أن تتعايش مع خلافاتها أو أن تحلها.
