يشكل العنوان «المحافظة باء.. من عسير جنوباً إلى القصيم شمالاً» مدخلاً مناسباً إلى متن هذا الكتاب؛ ذلك أنه يعكس حياة مؤلفه، وما يريد البوح به لقارئه من ذكريات قريبة عاشها في حياته المهنية كمهندس جيولوجي في حلّه وترحاله بين قرى ومحافظات المملكة، وإذا ما عطفنا النظر على العنوان الآخر "مذكرات مهندس الاستكشاف الجيولوجي في قرى وهِجَر المملكة"، نجد أننا أمام منجمٍ خصبٍ من حياة حافلة بالعلم والعمل دوّنت من خلال أعمال ومشاهدات ويوميات أعاد تشكيلها مشاري العلي في الذاكرة، وأحسن قولها بفعل الكتابة.
يقول المؤلف عن عمله هذا: "كنت أحتار دائماً عندما يقترح علي أحدهم أن أوثق رحلاتي وتنقلاتي في هِجر المملكة وقُراها، ليس لأنني لا أحار جواباً، بل لأن الفكرة غير مقبولة غالباً، وذلك لأنني لم أبلغ من العُمر عتياً لكي أدوّن ما أمرُّ به، فقد اعتدنا نحن العرب على الاعتقاد بأن من يريد أن يدوّن أو يسجّل ملاحظات سفره وترحاله لا بدّ أن يشبه ابن بطوطة أو ابن ماجد، وأن يكون الشيب قد غزا رأسه ولحيته، والزمن قد جعّد جبينه وأضعف ظهره وأماله، وما ذلك إلا من هول ما رآه في تنقلاته.
ويتابع المؤلف: بعد أن نالت الفكرة استحساني، أردت أن لا يكون الكتاب مجرّد قصص ومواقف كألف ليلة وليلى، بل أردتُ أن أناقش بشكل عملي وشبابي في آنٍ واحدٍ ما يستوقفني من أمور اجتماعية ومظاهر تستدعي الذكر؛ أحببت أن أدوّن ما أمرُّ به كل يوم في حياتي العملية من تنقلاتٍ من محافظة إلى محافظة، ومن قرية إلى قرية. ليس لأجل نفسي، بل لكي أجيب من كان يسألني عما أفعله في الصحراء أو عن ماهية عملي في كل محفل أو لقاء، فكان هذا الكتاب الذي آمل أن تجد فيه، أيها القارئ العزيز، ما يغني ويمتع ويفيد.
