لقد نال الأدب العربي على مرّ العصور جهداً كبيراً من الباحثين، حيث تناولوه بالدرس والتحليل، وكان العصر العباسي أزهى عصوره الأدبية، فترك لنا هذا العصر كنزاً من الكتب والدراسات حول شعراء العصر وكتابه وأحداثه.
وخلال هذا الكتاب يتوقف المؤلف مع أحد شعراء العصر العباسي الأول، وهو (محمود بن الحسن الوراق، ت 230هـ)، وهو من طائفة الشعراء الزهاد خلال هذا العصر، ويمثل طائفة شعرية ظهرت بشكل طبيعي، وأصبحت تواجه أشعار الزندقة واللهو والمجون على يد شعراء آخرين.
لذا فقد قام المؤلف بدراسته وتحقيقه من جميع الجوانب مع جمع أبياته المتناثرة في مصادر الأدب العربي، باذلاً الجهد الكبير لإخراج ديوانه إخراجاً علميّاً.
