هناك علاقة وارتباط بين اسم "القصيم" وشجر "الغضا"، فالقصيم جمع قصيمة وهي الرمال التي تنبت الغضا، وقد فصل الشيخ محمد بن ناصر العبودي في معجم بلاد القصيم في موضوع إشتقاق كلمة القصيم، وأورد ما قيل عن ذلك في المعاجم القديمة، ومنها ما جاء في لسان العرب "القصيمة ما سهل من الأرض، وكثر شجره" العبودي، 1410).
وكما سبق فقد وصف الأصفهاني القصيم بأنه "موضع ذو غضا، فيه مياه كثيرة وقرى" الأصفهاني، ونحو ذلك قال أبو اسحق الحربي في وصف القصيم".
وبهذه القصائم اودية فيها شجر الفاكهة، من التين والخوخ والرمان، وفاكهته أطيب فاكهة وأعذبها وأرقها" (الحربي 1389).
وهذه هي صفة منطقة القصيم حيث كانت أشجار الغضا تنتشر في كثير من المناطق الرملية المنتشرة في المنطقة خاصة في نفود الغميس جنوب وغرب بريدة، وتنتشر شجرة الغضا – في الوقت الحاضر – في نفود صعافيق، وفي القصيمات الرملية قرب بلدة القوارة شمال القصيم، وفي نفود عريق الدسم غرب القصيم، إلا أنها تنتشر بشكل كثيف نسبياً، حيث تشكل غابات طبيعية في نفود الشقيقة قرب عنيزة حيث عمل على حمايتها من القطع.
كما أن وصف الحربي والهمذاني والأصفهاني عن كثرة النخل وأنه في حواء الرمل فهو ينطبق على ما هو موجود في الوقت الحاضر من خبوب غرب وجنوب بريدة من وجود النخل والأشجار في منخفضات بين كثبان الرمل.
