يعتمد وجود نظام اقتصادي متقدم يحقق الرفاهية لأفراد المجتمع على وجود نظام مالي فعال، يتيح لمنشآت الأعمال فرصة الحصول على عناصر الإنتاج المختلفة. ويتطلب وجود نظام مالي فعال – من بين عناصر أخرى- توفر مجموعة متنوعة من المؤسسات والأسواق المالية تسهل عملية تجميع المدخرات وتوجيهها إلى قنوات الاستثمار المرغوبة. هده الأسواق تقدم للمقترضين الأموال التي يحتاجونها، في حين تقدم للمقرضين تشكيلة متنوعة من الأصول المالية مع درجات مختلفة من الأمان و السيولة والعائد. ويساعد وجود أسواق مالية منظمة في عملية تحويل الثروة من خلال تسهيل عمليات تداول الأدوات المالية. فمن خلال الأسواق المالية يتم تدفق الأموال من الوحدات ذات الفائض المالي إلى الوحدات ذات العجز المالي. دلك أن هده الأسواق تقدم للوحدات ذات العجز إمكانية التمويل المناسب لتحقيق استثماراتها. كذلك تتيح الأسواق المالية الفرصة للوحدات ذات الفائض المالي لاستثمار هدا الفائض في أدوات مالية متنوعة. وبذلك يمكن القول أن للأسواق المالية وظيفتان، الأولى اقتصادية و دلك بتسهيل تحويل الموارد الاقتصادية الحقيقية من الأطراف المقرضة إلى الأطراف المقترضة، فالأطراف المقرضة تؤجل إشباع حاجاتها الحالية ودلك باقتطاع جزء من دخولها وتتنازل عنه للأطراف المقترضة في مقابل الحصول على عائد مناسب مقابل هدا التنازل، وعندما يستخدم المقترضون الأموال المقترضة في الحصول على الموارد الحقيقية، أي في شراء وتأجير عوامل الإنتاج المختلفة، فإنهم سوف يحققون دخولا أعلى مما ينعكس على المستوى الحقيقي للمعيشة بالارتفاع ليس فقط للأطراف المقترضة و لكن لكافة الأطراف الأخرى المشاركة في النظام الاقتصادي.
