يعرض هذا الكتاب لتاريخ حركة المقاومة الشعبية في بلاد البلقان ضد الحكم العثمانى (1804) وحتى هزيمة الأتراك في الحرب العالمية الأولى وخروجهم من المنطقة (1920). وكانت حركة المقاومة تلقى تأييد القوى العظمى آنذاك (إنجلترا وفرنسا والنمسا وروسيا) بهدف التخلص من العثمانين على اعتبار أنهم يمثلون حكماً إسلاميا لشعوب مسيحية. وعلى هذا اختلط العامل القومى بالعامل الدينى في الصراع وأصبح الدين يمثل الشخصية القومية لشعوب البلقان في نضالها من أجل تأكيد خصوصيتها الذاتية.
وفي هذا المنعطف من الصراع تدخلت القوى العظمى لصياغة مستقبل هذه الشعوب كنوع من تأمين حدودها المتاخمة للدولة العثمانية، ثم أصبح إقامة دول مستقلة في تلك المنطقة أكثر إلحاحا بعد قيام ثورة البلاشفة في روسيا (أكتوبر -نوفمبر 1917) حتى لا تنتشر الشيوعية بسهولة في تلك البلاد.
