سفر من أهم كتب السادة الشافعية؛ إذ هو مختصر لكتاب «الأم» الذي ألفه الإمام الشافعي رضي الله عنه وأرضاه. ومكانة المؤلف رحمه الله تعالى مشهورة معروفة، حيث بلغ رتبة الاجتهاد المطلق؛ وآثر أن يبقى تحت كنف إمامه الشافعي رضي الله عنهما. قال الإمام الشافعي رحمه الله في حق البويطي: (ليس أحد من أصحابي أعلم من البويطي). وكان الشافعي رحمه الله تعالى يعتمد البويطي في الفتيا، ويحيل عليه إذا جاءته مسألة، وقد استخلفه على أصحابه بعد موته، فتخرجت على يديه أئمة. قال عنه الربيع: (كان أبو يعقوب من الشافعي بمكان مكين). وقال عنه السبكي: (كان إماماً جليلاً، عابداً زاهداً، فقيهاً عظيماً، جبلاً من جبال العلم والدين، غالب أوقاته الذكر والتشاغل بالعلم، غالب ليله التهجد والتلاوة، سريع الدمعة). ذكر الربيع: أن البويطي وابن أبي الحكم تنازعا الحلقة في مرض الشافعي، فقال: (الحلقة للبويطي). وهذا كتابه يظهر محققاً لأول مرة بعد أن بقي في غياهب المخطوطات أكثر من (1200) سنة. ومحققه العلامة الدكتور القره داغي بذل في تحقيقه سنوات طوالاً، حيث كان رفيق دربه وأنيسه طيلة عقود مضت، فجزاه الله عنا وعن المسلمين خيراً. وإن دار المنهاج كما هو ديدنها سباقة لنشر التراث عامة، والفقه الشافعي خاصة، لتزف هذه البشرى الغالية للأمة الإسلامية، فهنيئاً لنا بهذا العقد الثمين.
