في تصديرنا للجزء الأول من هذا الكتاب، حرصنا على أن نشير إلى موقف برتراند رسل من مشكلة ارتباط الفلسفة بالحضارة الغربية، وهو الارتباط الذي يؤكده عنوان الكتاب ذاته. وسوف يرى القارئ، في خاتمة هذا الكتاب، أن المؤلف يعود إلى تأكيد هذا المعنى ذاته ويبرزه في الصفحات الأخيرة من كتابه. فهو يقدم سببين رئيسيين لاقتصاره في الكتاب على معالجة حكمة الغرب، وعدم إفساحه مجالًا "لما يطلق عليه عادة اسم حكمة الشرق": الأول هو أن العالمين، الغربي والشرقي، قد سارا في طريقين منفصلين بحيث تطور كل منهما بمعزل عن الآخر. والثاني هو أن تطور الفلسفة في الغرب قد اتسم بسمة فريدة، هي أنه سار في طريقه منذ أيام اليونانيين، مرتبطًا بالعلم، وكان هذا الارتباط هو الذي أضفى على الحضارة الغربية ذلك الطابع الذي يميزها عن "تأملات العقل الشرقي".
هذان التعليلان يثيران اعتراضات لا أول لها ولا آخر، ولو أطلق المرء لفكره العنان لاحتاجت مناقشته لهذا الموضوع إلى دراسة كاملة. ولكن، حسبنا أن نورد بعض الملاحظات على آراء رسل هذه، كما نحفز ذهن القارئ إلى مزيد من التفكير.
في تلك الأسئلة التي أترك للقارئ مهمة التفكير فيها والبحث عن إجابة عنها، ولا شك عندي أن قراءة هذا الكتاب ستكون خير معين له على أن يهتدي إلى الإجابة بنفسه، أو على الأقل، ستحفزه على أن يفكر بمزيد من الوعي، فيحقق بذلك ما كانت الفلسفة، طوال تاريخها، تطمح إليه.
