يعد العصر البابلي القديم (1595-2004ق.م) ذروة في التنوّع والتطور والإبداع، وذلك لاستكشاف كميات كبيرة من النصوص المسمارية ذات مضامين متنوعة، سواء كان من ناحية الحياة اليومية، الإجتماعية، الدينية، السياسية، الإقتصادية، التجارية ... الخ. والكتاب عبارة عن قراءة وترجمة وتحليل لمجموعة من النصوص المسمارية المكتشفة في مدينة بيكاسي (حالياً تعرف بتل أبو عنتيك) الواقع 50 كم جنوب مدينة بابل، حيث أن جميع النصوص المدروسة في هذا الكتاب تعود إلى أيام حكم الملك سمسو - ايلونا (1712-1749) (Samsu - iluna ق.م) إبن الملك الشهير خامورابي (1750-1792) (Hammurabi ق.م( من أشهر ملوك سلالة بابل الأولى والعصر البابلي العميق.
وللنصوص المدروسة في هذا الكتاب أهمية خاصة بوصفها نصوص ذات مضامين متنوعة وتكمن ميزاتها العلمية في أنها تسلط الأضواء على الحياة اليومية لمدينة بيكاسي من خلال رسائل، عقد زواج، عقود إيجار عقارات أو أشخاص، عقود قرض متنوعة فضلاً عن نص مدرسي ونصوص أخرى متنوعة مما يضع الإطار العام لهذه الدراسة.
إن جميع النصوص عثر عليها عن طريق التنقيبات الأثرية لذلك فإن دراسة هذه النوعية من النصوص مهمة جداً لتوضيح تاريخ مدينة بيكاسي والحياة الإجتماعية والدينية فيها.
