شهد المجتمع العراقي ضروباً من التغير عبر مسيرته الحضارية خلال القرن العشرين، ويذهب المتخصصون الإجتماعيون إلى أن الزمن عامل رئيسي في حركة التغير الإجتماعي وهو ما حاولنا تتبعه خلال بحثنا منذ أواخر خمسينات القرن العشرين ومطلع القرن الواحد والعشرين، والتغير في خطه العام يعني حدوث إختلاف في أية ظاهرة يمكن خضوعها للملاحظة عبر أية فترة زمنية، وقد يكون هذا الإختلاف بسيطاً لا يتعدى تحويراً شكلياً سطحياً لا يلفت نظر المشاهد وقد يكون إختلافاً جوهرياً في الظاهرة التي تدرس.
وهذا ما حاول المؤلف تشخيصه في بحثه هذا من خلال تتبعه شكل المثال القيمي في المجتمع العراقي ورصد بدايات التغير فيه، وقد وجد الباحث أن المثال القيمي لم يشهد تغيراً على مستوى المصادر التي استقى مبادئه منها بل إنه عاد إليها مطلع الإحتلال إلا أن ذلك لا يعني أن معالم المثال كانت ثابتة، فقد شهدت تغيرات طفيفة رافقت تغيرات الأوضاع الإجتماعية والإقتصادية والسياسية التي شهدها البلد، إلا أن الذي حدث كان تطويعاً لهذا المثال كي يوافق تلك التغيرات وقد كان ميدان التطويع هذا السلوك الإجتماعي فكانت معالم تلك التغيرات أوضح في مظاهره السلوكية منها في مثاله القيمي.
وقد حاول إستقصاء ذلك بعد تحديده حدود الموضوع النظرية ومنهجه العلمي وفق فصول خمسة كان أولها: بحث الإعداد الإجتماعي والبناء القيمي وفق آلية بناء النظرية الإجتماعية، ثم بحث مسيرة الحراك الإجتماعي في المجتمع العراقي، وكان مضمون المحور الثالث تفسير السلوك الإجتماعي وفق معادلة إجتماعية - نفسية.
أما المحور الرابع فقد بحث أوضاع العراق مطلع الإحتلال الأمريكي، وأخيراً حاول المبحث الخامس تأطير التجريب الذي استعرضه في متن البحث نظرياً، ثم ختم البحث بخاتمة وفهرست بقائمة المصادر.
