عثمان بن جني الموصلي، أبو الفتح: من أئمة الأدب والنحو، وله شعر.
ولد بالموصل وتوفي ببغداد، عن نحو 65 عاما.
وكان أبوه مملوكا روميا لسليمان بن فهد الأزدي الموصلي.
من تصانيفه رسالة في «من نسب إلى أمه من الشعراء - خ» و «شرح ديوان المتنبي - ط» و «المبهج - ط» في اشتقاق أسماء رجال الحماسة، و «المحتسب - ط» في شواذ القراآت، و «سر الصناعة - ط» الأول منه، في اللغة، و «الخصائص - ط» ثلاثة أجزاء، في اللغة، و «اللمع - خ» [ثم طُبع] في النحو، و «التصريف الملوكي - ط» و «التنبيه - ط» في شرح ديوان الحماسة، و «المذكر والمؤنث - ط» و «المصنف - ط» باسم «المنصف» و «الصنف في شرح التصريف للمازني»، و «التمام - ط» في تفسير أشعار هذيل، و «إعراب أبيات ما استصعب من الحماسة - خ» و «المقتضب من كلام العرب - ط» رسالة، وغير ذلك وهو كثير.
وكان المتنبي يقول: ابن جني أعرف بشعري مني

هذا كتابٌ أشرحُ فيه كتاب أبي عثمان بكر بن محمد بن بَقيَّةَ المازني رحمه الله في التصريف، بتمكين أصوله، وتهذيب فضوله، ولا أدعُ فيه بحول الله وقوته غامضاً إلا شرحته، ولا مشكلاً إلا أوضحته، ولا كثيراً من الأشباه والنظائر إلا أوردته، ليكون هذا الكتاب قائماً بنفسه، ومتقدماً في جنسه، فإذا أتيتُ على آخره، أفردت فيه باباً لتفسير ما فيه من اللغة الغريبة، فإذا فرغت من ذلك الباب أوردتُ فصلاً من المسائل المشكلة العويصة التي تشحذُ الأفكار، وتروض الخواطر، وليس ينبغي أن يتخطى إلى النظر في هذه المسائل من لم يُحكِم الأصول قبلها، فإنَّهُ إن هجم عليها غير ناظرٍ فيما قبلها من أصول التصريف الموطئة للفروع، لم يحظ منها بكبير طائلٍ، وصعبت عليه أيما صعوبةٍ، وكان حكمه في ذلك حُكْمَ من أراد الصعود إلى قلة جبل سامق في غير ما سبيل، أو كجازع مفازةٍ لا يهتدي لها بلا دليلٍ.
