على كثرة ما ألفه المستشرقون من الكتب عن حياة الرسول الأعظم في مختلف اللغات الراقية، وعلى كثرة اعتماد كتابنا عليها- أرى اللغة العربية خالية من ترجمة لكتاب مستشرق فيها، وقد تجنى المستشرقون على الحقائق في سيرة الرسول الأعظم لا ريب، وقد كان تجنيبهم هذا عاملًا في زهد كتاب العرب عن نقل ما ألفوه إلى العربية على ما يتحمل، ولكن عطل اللغة العربية من ذلك يعد نقصًا في حركتنا العلمية على كل حال.
والأمر مهما يكن فإن كتاب "حياة محمد" الذي ألفه الأستاذ "إميل درمنغم" والذي نعرض ترجمته، أكثر الكتب التي ألفها الغربيون عن الرسول الأعظم اعتدالًا، فقد حاول فيه "أن يؤلف سيرة ناطقة صادقة للنبي مستندًا إلى أقدم المصادر العربية غير غافل عما جاء في الكتب الحديثة"... والمؤلف مع ما ساده من حسن النية لم تخل سوانحه وآراؤه من زلات، وقد كنت أود أعلق عليها بعض حواش لو لم أر أن ذلك يخرجني عن دائرة الترجمة، وعرض الترجمة هذا الكتاب هو مقصدي الآن، فأرجو، لذلك، ألا يظن القارئ أنني أشاطر المؤلف جميع ما ذهب إليه من الأمور التي آرى أن الحقيقة غابت عنه في كثير منها.
