إن هذا الكتاب لهو من أكثر الكتب التي ألفها الغربيون في الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم اعتدالاً، فقد حاول فيه أن يؤلف سيرة ناطقة صادقة للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم مستنداً إلى أقدم المصادر العربية غير غافل عما جرى في الكتب الحديثة.
والمؤلف مع ما ساده من حسن النيّة لم تخل سوانحه وآراؤه من زلاّت، وقد عمد المترجم إلى وضع تعليقاته على بعضها في الحواشي، مؤكداً أنه وإن فاته شيء من التعليق عما ورد فإن ذلك لا يعني مشاطرته المؤلف في جميع ما ذهب إليه من الأمور التي يرى أن الحقيقة غابت عنه في كثير منها.
