هذا الكتاب دراسة حول شخصية من أبرز الشخصيات العربية, وعلم من أعلامها هو أبو بكر محمد بن دريد. كما أن هذا البحث لن يكون ترجمة فقط لهذا العالم الجليل, وإنما فيه تقديم لون من ألوان جهوده العلمية من خلال كتاب له صغير الحجم. ولكنه ذو قيمة كبيرة جداً. كما يمثل هذا الكتاب ذخراً لا يكاد يستغني عنه باحث في المجال اللغوي. فقد وضع ابن دريد هذا الشرح للمنظومة التي نظمها مقارنة بين المقصور والممدود. وتلك أولى المقارنات في تلك الدراسة, أما ثانيتها: فهي مقارنة هذا العمل بعمل آخر لابن دريد في المجال نفسه بصورة أو بآخرى أما المقارنة الثالثة فهي بين عمل آخر يشبه ذلك العمل الدريدي هو المنقوص والممدود وبهذا قد وضع البحث أمامه ثلاثة أصناف من المقارنة: مقارنة داخلية بين جزء وجزء آخر من العمل العلمي الواحد, مقارنة شخصية وهي المقارنة الذاتية التي نقارن فيها بين الشخص في عمل ما من أعماله والشخص ذاته ولكن في عمل آخر, مقارنة مجالية وهي المقارنة التي نقارن فيها بين عمل في مجال معين لشخص وعمل آخر في المجال ذاته لشخص آخر.
