أتيت على هذا الكتاب قارئاً متأملاً ووجدت فيه مرامي، غير أنه من الواجب عليَّ أن أنبِّه على أنَّ الذي أغراني به وزيَّنه في قلبي وحبَّبَ إِليَّ العمل فيه وأنزله في نفسي منزلة المحَبّ أمران، أولهما أن صاحبه له عندي مَيْل وهوى وقَرا في روعي حين حققت الجزء الثالث من كتاب الأشباه والنظائر في النحو للسيوطي، وثانيهما ما رأيته في مطبوعة الكتاب من أشياء سآتي على ذكرها في فقرة قادمة عنوانها "صلتي بالبحث".
قسمت هذا العمل قسمين، تناولت في أولهما ابن ولاَّد اسمه ونسبه وشيوخه ومصنفاته، ووقفت عند كتابه "المقصور والممدود" وبحثت في عنوانه ونسبته إلى ابن ولاَّد ومنهج مؤلفه فيه وخصصت راويه أبا الحسين المهلبي بالكلام وناقشت قول علي بن حمزة فيه، ثم رأيت أن أحصي ما أُلِّف في المقصور والممدود، وسقت ما وقفت عليه مما أُلف فيه وفق وفيات المصنفين، وأشرت إلى المطبوع منه، وانتهيت إلى ملاحظات حول نسبة بعض المصنفات في المقصور والممدود، ثم ختمت بالحديث عن النسخ المعتمدة في التحقيق والمنهج الذي اهتديت به.
وأما القسم الثاني فهو الكتاب محقِّقاً، وقد أشرت إلى الأمور التي كانت وراء تحقيق هذا الكتاب في حديثي عن منهج التحقيق.
