تعد ظاهرة تصنيف الرسائل الجامعة للألفاظ المشتركة في حرف واحد الحاملة لاسم هذا الحرف مرحلة متقدمة في التأليف والتنظيم والتبويب ابتدعها الأعلام من العلماء، ومنهم أي الفتح عثمان بن جني صاحب هذا الكتاب "ما يحتاج إليه الكاتب من مهموز ومقصود وممدود". فالكتاب في مضمونه يكشف عن جانب من جوانب ظاهرة الهمزة في اللغة العربية ونطقها وكتابتها، والتي هي من المسائل المهمة فيها مهموزة كانت اللفظة أم مقصورة أم ممدودة. لذلك فالكتاب يمكن له أن يكون معجماً مختصراً في المهموز أولاً، مع فوائد مهمة في المقصور والممدود، ولكونه معجماً صغيراً في الفاظ مشتركة في حرف واحد، فهو يسهل الرجوع إليه في أحكام مثل الوقف والإبتداء النحوية، وليس في أحوال الوقف والإبتداء القرآنية.
ولأهمية هذا الأثر اللغوي عمل الدكتور عبد الباقي الخزرجي على إخراجه في حلة جديدة وتحقيقه بالإستناد إلى نسخ خطية عنه ورسائل أخرى لإبن جني، وكان منهجه في التحقيق التعليق على مواضع الغموض، وإيراد المعاني المختلفة للفظة الواحدة التي اكتفى إبن جني بذكر واحد منها فقط، لإتمام الفائدة وشيوع المادة، مع الإشارة إلى نسبة الاراء الواردة في الكتاب إلى أصحابها ، وتصويب التحريفات والتصحيفات وبيان مواضع السقط، وذلك بالرجوع إلى المصادر المتعددة وخاصة المعاجم منها.
