هذا الكتاب الذي بين يديك واحد من المؤلفات اللغوية لعلم من أعلام القرن الرابع الهجري، أرى فيه نمطًا من أنماط التأليف المعجمي لمعاجم أبنية المفردات المتخصصة، إذ يحوي مفردات العربية من الألفاظ المقصورة والممدودة والمهموزة وما يمد ويقصر من تلك الأسماء مبوبة وفق الأمثلة. وصاحبه ليس غريبًا عن حقل المشاركة في الأعمال المعجمية العامة فهو صاحب معجم البارع أيضًا.
وقد حاولت في عملي هذا أن أقدم نص كتاب المقصور والممدود لأبي علي القالي محققًا تحقيقًا علميًا في صورة آمل أن يرضى عنها الباحثون والقراء. وقدمت له بدراسة عن مصطلح المقصور وتطوره والتداخل الذي كان بين مصطلح المنقوص ومصطلح المقصور، ثم صنعت قائمة لمؤلفات المقصور والممدود في التراث العربي، وتلا ذلك دراسة لكتاب القالي بينت فيها منهجه ومصادره وجهد القالي في تأليف الكتاب، فضلًا عن تقويم للكتاب بين مؤلفات المقصور والممدود، وأثر كتاب القالي في مؤلفات لاحقيه من علماء العربية إلى نهاية القرن الحادي عشر الهجري. وبالطبع ترجمته لأبي علي القالي صاحب الكتاب ترجمة وافية.
