"وهكذا يا سنو لم أعد بقادرة على السيطرة على تلك الرغبة الجامحة. أعرف أنني أعيد عليك ما قصصته من قبل. وها هي حكاياتي أكررها خوفا من الصمت. وأعرف أنني وحدي في الجب. وأعرف أنني أناجيك بالرغم من ثقتي أنهم لم يسمحوا لك بمصاحبتي في أحلك أيامي. لكنني سأستمر في الحديث وكأنك معي، حتى ساعة خروج الروح، أو إلى أن تنطقين. إن صمتك أشق علي أحيانا من إحساسي بكم، أصبحت مملة. تختلط الذكريات بمخيلتي، فلا أدري ماذا قصصت وماذا أجلت القص. وإن كانت كلها حياتي، ولأنني ربما المستمعة الوحيدة، فماذا يضيرني لو تشابكت خيوط الذكرى، وتداخلت الأزمنة؟ لذا أقول لك، وكأنك معي، إنني حين انتابتني تلك الرغبة التي تسوي الجبال بالأرض، وتشق الوديان، وتحيي الموتى، كنت واثقة أن في ذلك نهايتي. لن يقبل أحد أن يلد الملك. ابن الإله لا يلد. وليس من حولي من هو بقادر على حمايتي. فأي طامع في العرش، ورئيس الكهنة في ذعر دائم خشية اكتشاف الشعب للسر أن مليكهم ما هو إلا امرأة. لذا لم يكن من حولي سوى واحد فقط ظننت أنه وبسبب جامح حبنا، سوف يقف معي أمامهم جميعا إن احتاج الأمر".
