إن الإنجاز الأهم في تاريخ الحضارة السومرية هو بلا شك اختراعهم أقدم كتابة في تاريخ البشرية وهي الكتابة المسمارية التي طوروها حوالي سنة 3200 قبل الميلاد. ويشكل اختراع الكتابة وإدخالها في الاستعمال العام أهم حدث في التاريخ الفكري للبشر، فهو الحد الذي يفصل بين مرحلة ما قبل التاريخ، والمراحل التاريخية اللاحقة. سميت الكتابة السومرية بالكتابة المسمارية لأن شكلها يشبه المسامير. والسبب في ذلك عائد إلى طبيعة المواد التي استعملوها في الكتابة: ألواح من طين تغمس الكتابة فيها غمساً بواسطة قلم من قصب فيشكل الغمس في الرقيم الطيني مثلثاً يشبه رأس المسمار. ثم تخط خطوط عمودية وأخرى أفقية فيحصل على شكل مشابه للمسار. بعد ذلك كانت الألواح الطينية الرطبة توضع في تنور وتطبخ بالنار وتصلب تمهيداً للاحتفاظ بها. وكانت الكتابة المسمارية في طورها الأول كتابة صورية كالهيروغليفية، ولكن السومريين سرعان ما طوروها لتصبح كتابة مقطعية وبهذا تم اختزال الرموز المستعملة فيها إلى أصوات المقاطع في اللغة السومرية البالغة حوالي 598 مقطعاً صوتياً.
هذا الكتاب الذي أضعه بين يدي القارئ العربي يعتمد على فقراته على جميع المصادر التي بحثت في قواعد اللغة السومرية وأخص منها بالذكر:

2- A. Falkenstein, Grammatik Der Sprache Gudeas Von Lagash I.II
3- A. Falkenstein, Das Sumeriche.
وقد حرصت بشكل خاص على تدوين الأمثلة التوضيحية بالخط المسماري ليتمكن القارئ من التعرف بالعلامات المسمارية المؤلفة للخط المذكور. وإنني أذكر هنا بصورة خاصة بأن هذا الكتاب الذي يناقش قواعد اللغة السومرية ما هو إلا محاولة تسعى إلى كتابة قواعد اللغة المذكورة باللغة العربية.
لقد استخدمت في هذا الكتاب أمثلة حية مأخوذة من نصوص سومرية منشورة وفي الحالات التي لم أستطع العثور لها على أمثلة حية عرضت القاعدة فقط دون أمثلة. وأملي كبير أن يقدم هذا الكتاب جزء من الفائدة المرجوة منه.
