"لابد أنه رأى ذلك، فقد كنا نتجمد حين يكون الجو برداً، وكنا جوعى قبل وبعد تناول الوجبات.
انظر بنفسك إن كان ذلك واضحا أم لا". ووضع إصبعين فى فمه وصفر و... هوب... ظهر شكل أنثوى يشبه تماما التاجرة الصغيرة "مارى سوير". وحين يسمح للمتهم بمحامى دفاع، نظرا لهذا الدليل الذى يجلب الفضيحة، يقول فيوكوومبى، "لكنه يجب أن يقاضيك"، وحين يقدم السيد بيتشام نفسه بهذه الصفة، يتحدد ذنب موكله. يقول القاضى الأعلى أنه يجب أن توجه إليه تهمة المساعدة والتحريض، لأنه وضع فى أيدى قومه هذه الأمثولة التى هى أيضا موهبة. ثم يحكم عليه بالموت. لكن المشنقة لا تتلقى سوى الحالم، الذى فهم فى لحظة صحو إلى أى مدى سحيق تعود آثار الجريمة التى يقع ضحيتها هو وأمثاله.
