إن هذا الكتاب الذي بين يديك يقدم لنا أول صورة لخروجنا عن المألوف مما تقرأه في كتب تاريخ الفلسفة القديمة عامة والفلسفة اليونانية على وجه الخصوص، فهو يقدم لنا تأريخًا لمدرسة الإسكندرية الفلسفية باعتبارها مدرسة فلسفية جديدة تعبر عن عصر جديد تأثر بالفلسفة اليونانية. هذا العصر الجديد شهدت فيه الإسكندرية إحياءً لا محدودًا للتراث الفلسفي المصري القديم، متمثلًا في الكتابات الهرمسية، كما شهدت أول ظهور لليهود وفلاسفتهم على الساحة الفكرية، رغم أن اليهودية كديانة تعود إلى القرن الرابع عشر أو الخامس عشر قبل الميلاد، كما ظهرت لأول مرة فلسفة مسيحية يعبر أعلامها عن رؤيتهم التفسيرية لديانتهم الجديدة في إطار فلسفي عقلاني يحاول تأويل آيات الكتاب المقدس تأويلًا عقليّا رمزيّا.
