"الخصال" لأبي جعفر محمد بن علي بابويه، كتاب مبتكر في موضوعه فريد في بابه، مفعم بالحقائق، ملء غصونه رقائق، جؤنة حافلة بنفيس الأعلاق من طرائف الحكم ومحاسن الأخلاق، وفرائض الأحكام وملامح الأيام، وعظات وعبر وبينات من صحصح الأثر مما لم يجمع مثله في كتاب. وهو بما في طيه الدروس العالية والأبحاث القيمة من نفائس الأخبار منهل عذب أظمأت إليه علماء الإعصار، فلو طلع على نفائس الفقيه يقتصد في قوته ليقتنيه.
والقارئ جدّ عليم بأن قيمة الكتاب بلباب المعارف لا بتكثير الصحائف، وبفخامة الأسرار، وبجلالة ما وعى من الفوائد لا يكثره ما حوى من الزوائد، والخصال مع صغر حجمه دائرة معارف تحتوي علوماً جمّة من معارف الإسلام وأحكام الحلال والحرام، وغيرها مما لا غنى عنه لأي فقيه أو أديب أو مؤرخ أو مفسر أو واعظ ناطق...
والباحث مهما سبح في أجواء بحره الطامي وخاض غمراته واغتمس في أمواجه يجده بحراً زاخراً جياش العباب، فيه اللؤلؤ والمرجان. وإذا ورد مناهله الروية واغترف من مائه أو ارتشف من عذبه يجده غير آسن أصغى من المزن وأطيب من السمك، ولا يسع الإنسان حين يناوله ويصفح أوراقه إلا أن تأخذه الدهشة وتعتريه الحيرة لما يرى من كثرة اطلاع مؤلفه وجهوده في اقتناء غرائب درره، وكم شوارد غرره، وكما كابده في أسفاره ورحلاته لجمعه وتنسيقه.
وبالنظر للأهمية التي يحتلها هذا الكتاب فقد اعتني بتحقيقه وبتدوين ترجمة لرجاله الذين لم يذكروا في كتب الخاصة وكثيراً ما يحتاج القارئ إلى الوقوف على حالهم، ولإرشاد المستفيدين وتسهيلاً للباحثين قام المحقق بتبيان غريب اللفظ ومشكل اللغة، كما واهتم بتذييل الكتاب بفهرس عام لجميع الأحاديث النبوية المستشهد بها فيه.
