تبدأ الرواية في ظروف غامضة للغاية في الفترة الثانية . تج البطلة , سيدة عجوزة , فتاة شابة مغشيا عليها أمام منزلها الواقع في قرية مهجورة . ملابسها ممزقة , متسخة , وبلا حذاء . رغم أن البطلة لاتعلم من هي هذة الفتاة وما الذي أدى بها إلي هذة الحالة ، تقرر استضافتها . تعيش الفتاة مع السيدة العجوز وبداخل كل منهما أسرار تتعلق بماضيها لا تسطتيع أي منهما أن تبوح با الأخرى . إلى أن تتفاجأن بالصدمة الكبيرة التي تكشف عن كل شيء في نهاية الرواية .
فماذا سيكون ردة فعلهما ؟ ولماذا تقرر كل منهما هذة النهاية ؟ تبدع الكتابة بمهارتها الأدبية أن تجمع بين السرد والشعر والحوار الداخلي والأحداث التاريخية والتقارير السياسية في رواية واحدة عن الفقد , عن الكرامة , عن الصراع من أجل البقاء , عن الماضي الأسود , وعن الخطايا التي لا تنسي ولا تغتفر .
