"إنها رواية قوية.. مخيفة.. مليئة بالمشاعر.. ستظل ذكرى لن تنساها. تدور أحداث الرواية في فترتين مختلفتين؛ فترة جمهورية إستونيا السوفيتية الاشتراكية، وفترة جمهورية إستونيا بعد استقلالها عن الاتحاد السوفيتي. تبدأ الرواية في ظروف غامضة للغاية في الفترة الثانية. تجد البطلة، سيدة عجوز، فتاة شابة مغشيًا عليها أمام منزلها الواقع في قرية مهجورة. ملابسها ممزقة، متسخة، وبلا حذاء. رغم أن البطلة لا تعلم مَن هي هذه الفتاة وما الذي أدى بها إلى هذه الحالة، تقرر استضافتها. تعيش الفتاة مع السيدة العجوز وبداخل كل منهما أسرار تتعلق بماضيهما لا تستطيع أي منهما أن تبوح بها للأخرى. إلى أن تتفاجآن بالصدمة الكبيرة التي تكشف عن كل شيء في نهاية الرواية. فماذا سيكون رد فعل منهما؟ ولماذا تقرر كل منهما هذه النهاية؟ تُبدع الكاتبة بمهارتها الأدبية أن تجمع بين السرد والشعر والحوار الداخلي والأحداث التاريخية والمذكرات والتقارير السياسية في رواية واحدة عن الفقد، عن الكرامة، عن الصراع من أجل البقاء، عن الماضي الأسود، وعن الخطايا التي لا تُنسى ولا تُغتفر. كما تُركز الكاتبة على وحشية الحكم الروسي السوفيتي ومعاناة إستونيا في ظل الجمهورية الاشتراكية التي تصفها بـ""الاحتلال"". وعندما نالت الرواية جائزة الأدب لعام 2010 في دول الشمال الأوروبي، أشادت اللجنة المانحة للجائزة بالرواية، واعتبرت مواضيعها "" صالحة لكل زمان ولكل لغة""، وبينت أن ""مواضيعًا مثل الحب والخداع والقوة والعجز وردت بلغة مقنعة للغاية، وبوصف دقيق وغير عادي"".
وُلدت ""صوفي أوكسانين"" في عام 1967 في ""يوفاسكولا"" بفنلندا. وهي روائية معاصرة من أب فنلندي وأم إستونية. درست الدراما بأكاديمية المسرح الفنلندية. بدأت مشوارها الأدبي بروايتها الأولى عام 2003 ""بقرات ستالين""، ورُشحت لجائزة ""رونيبيرج"". وبعدها بعامين نشرت ثاني رواياتها ""بيبي جين"". اختيرت لإلقاء خطاب الافتتاح لمعرض فرانكفورت الدولي للكتاب عام 2014.
