ما الذي حدا بالاتحاد السوفييتي لتأييد قيام دولة إسرائيل والاعتراف بحقها في الوجود اعترافاً قانونياً كاملاً بعد أن دأب على التنديد بالصهيونية وشجبها طيلة عقود من الزمن؟ وماذا كانت عليه مصالح الاتحاد السوفييتي فيالمرحلة التي سبقت دعمه لإسرائيل؟ وما الذي تغير في مصالح الاتحاد السوفييتي ليتخلى عن دعمه وتأييده لإسرائيل وينتاب علاقاتهما الكثير من التحفظ والجمود بل والقطيعة أحياناً؟.
ستحاول هذه الدراسة أن تجيب على هذه التساؤلات وتساؤلات أخرى ذات صلة بالعلاقات السوفييتية الإسرائيلية وأن تحلل المواقف المتغيرة التي اتخذها الاتحاد السوفييتي تجاه إسرائيل والتي كثيراً ما بدت وكأنها متناقضة وغير متجانسة، غير أن التعرف على الدوافع الحقيقية لهذه المواقف السوفييتية تجاه إسرائيل، يظل أمراً محيراً تلعب فيه التخمينات والافتراضات دوراً كبيراً وذلك بسبب ندرة الوثائق السوفييتية الرسمية أو شبه الرسمية التي كان بمقدورها أن توفر للباحث ما ينقصه من مستندات رسمية تمكنه من الجزم بحقيقة الدوافع والأهداف التي كانت تكمن وراء هذا الموقف، وبالرغم من ذلك كله فقد حاولت الدراسة - ما أمكنها ذلك - تعويض الكثير من هذا النقص عن طريق الاعتماد على الوثائق الرسمية للأمم المتحدة، إضافة إلى الوثائق الرسمية لكل من بريطانيا والولايات المتحدة اللتين كانتا دوليتن حيلفتين للاتحاد السوفييتي خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية.
وقد جرى تقسيم الدراسة إلى الفصول الأتية:
الفصل الأول: المسألة اليهودية، الفصل الثاني: العلاقات السوفييتية الصهيونية خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية، الفصل الثالث: الاتحاد السوفييتي ومشروع تقسيم فلسطين، الفصل الرابع: الدعم السوفييتي لإسرائيل خلال حرب عام 1948، الفصل الخامس: بداية التحول في العلاقات السوفييتية الإسرائيلية.
