كانت البلاد الإسلامية قد انقسمت على نفسها وقت الحروب الصليبية : نتيجة للخلافات القائمة بين العباسيين والفاطميين ، لذا لعبت بعض القوى الإسلامية التي تعمدت مساندة الصليبيين دوراً بارزاً في دعم الغزاة ، وقد ظهرت هذه المواقف منذ الوهلة الأولى لوصولهم إلى المشرق الإسلامي ، وذلك في شمال العراق ، وبالتحديد في أنطاكية ، فقد قام أحد حراس الأبراج بالإتصال بالصليبيين ، وساعدهم على اقتحام المدينة ، ثم توالت المواقف المساندة للصليبيين طوال مدة بقائهم ( قرنين من الزمان ) وأن تلك المواقف تقل في بعض الأحيان نتيجة لعدة عوامل أهمها : وجود الشخصيات القيادية المحنكة التي تستطيع الوقوف في وجه تلك القوى بحزم وشدة .
وقد جاءت أهمية هذا الكتاب من ناحيتين : أولهما أنها تلقي الضوء على تلك المواقف ، وتظهرها على شكل موضوع متكامل ومترابط بحيث يتسنى معرفة أسبابها وآثارها على العالم الإسلامي وتأخره في دحر الغزاة .
وثانيهما أن العالم الإسلامي يمر في الوقت الحاضر بما يشبه فترة الحروب الصليبية من تفكك ، وتدهور وانحطاط وغزو وكذلك من وجود قوى إسلامية تساند الغزاة على إخوانهم المسلمين ولذلك فنحن في حاجة إلى دراسة تلك المواقف والتعرّف على دوافعها ونتائجها ومحاولة تفاديها قدر الإمكان .
