جاءت أهمية هذا الكتاب لأسباب عدة أهمها : أن كثيراً من البلاد الإسلامية تعرضت ولا زالت تتعرض للغزو بكل صوره : سياسياً وعسكرياً وفكرياً ، ومما لا شك فيه أن ذلك يعود إلى الضعف الذي تعيشه الأمة الإسلامية ، والتفكك ، وغير ذلك من المشاكل ، بافضافة إلى المواقف التي اتخذت وتتخذ من قبل القوى الإسلامية ، وكذلك المسيحية المحلية عند تعرض أي جزء من العالم الإسلامي لغزو من قِبل الأعداء . وبما أن الصورة لم تختلف كثيراً عن الماضي وما حدث فيه فإنه من اللازم دراسة تلك الأحداث ، ومعرفة تلك المواقف ، وأسبابها ، ومسبباتها ، ونتائجها من أجل الإستفادة وتلاشي أخطار تلك المواقف قبل حدوثها .
كما سلط الكتاب الضوء على تلك المواقف التي اتخذتها القوى الإسلامية والمسيحية إزاء أنطاكية سواء كانت هذه القوى داخل أنطاكية أو خارجها ، وسواء كانت مواقفها سلبية أم إيجابية ، وتتبع الأسباب التي دعت إلى اتخاذ مثل تلك المواقف ، ودراستها ، وتحليلها ، ومعرفة أهم ما نتج عنها ، وسوف يتم ذلك عن طريق تتبع أحداث الحصار والسقوط .
