النصوص الشعرية المعاصرة، التي توظف المعاني الصوفية، تعكس صراعاً نفسياً يعانيه أصحابها بين الطموح إلى الخلاص الذاتي بالاتصال بحقيقة كونية كبرى، والإحساس بواجب المساهمة في بناء المدينة الفاضلة. هذه الجدلية تشكل محوراً لهذه الدراسة لأعمال عبد الوهاب البياتي، بوصفها مرآة لتطور الشعر العربي في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين. ومن أبرز إسهامات البياتي في هذا المجال، وخاصة في ضوء تهميش دور الشعر في المجتمع وتكاثر النصوص الميتا-شعرية، الاهتداءُ إلى أقنعة ناجحة للتعبير عن هذه الجدلية.
تعالج هذه الدراسة رؤية البياتي الجمالية والفلسفية التي شحذتها مفارقة سورين كيركغارد الوجودية الخاصة بفارس الإيمان، إبراهيم الخليل، وقصّته مع الذبيح، وإصرار جان بول ساتر على اختزال دور الشاعر الى مشعل الحرائق في هشيم اللغة، وتبشير فريديريك نيتشه بموت الله، وكذلك ما اقترحته ت. س. إليوت من اختلاف الأصوات الشعرية. وفي الكتاب تصوّر فريد لمقوّمات عملية القراءة وخصوصيتها، انطلاقاً مما تستلزمه المرحلة الشعرية الراهنة من اعتبار القارئ شريكاً في إنتاج المعنى، وإدراكاً بأن الاستيعاب الذهني التدريجي لما يحويه ويوحي به النص، في الفضاء المكاني والزمني، هو غايةٌ جمالية في حد ذاتها.
هذا الكتاب هو الأخير من نتاجات باحث الأدب العربي د. رؤوبين سنير، بعد دراسات عديدة له، تمحورت بصفة خاصة حول تأريخ الأدب الحديث، الشعر المعاصر، المسرح الفلسطيني، الخيال العلمي، الأدب العربي ليهود العراق، والأدب الصوفي.
