قدّم الكاتب في هذا الكتاب بعض من سيرة الشاعر العراقي عبد الوهّاب البيّاتي الذي هو "من شعراء الطليعة العربية، ومن رواد التجديد في الشعر العربي"، أو لعله "بالأحرى لمحة من اللمحات التي فيها قليل من الإضاءة.. وفيها حبّ كثير وكبير لأولئك الذين أعطوا حياتنا نوراً وجمالاً، وجعلونا نأمل ونفرح ونأسى.. ونسلو، وفي كل ذلك بهجة ومتعة وسموّ لروحنا..".
الحديث عن الجوانب المختلفة من حياة الشاعر البيّاتي "الذي كان يسعى نحو القصيدة لاهثا حتى يلتقطها في مجمرة الشعر"، يتخذ شكل فصول متعددة، مثل فصل البياتي صاحب الريادة والإمارة، وفصل الدخول إلى عالمه والذي يتحدث عن حياة الشاعر المتواضعة في القاهرة، وعن أصحابه و"أقرانه اللاجئين من فلسطين وسوريا والأردن والعراق، ثم فصل عودته إلى بغداد بعد "تذكر البعثيون أن البياتي موجود في القاهرة"، و"أن لا ضير عليه لو عاد إلى الوطن"، وفصل وجوده في اسبانيا إثر "تعيينه مستشاراً في السفارة العراقية برتبة وزير مفوض".
ثم فصل يبحث في ملامحه الحياتية والفنية والنفسية، وفيه أبرز محطات الشاعر الحياتية، من دراسته وعمله في بغداد، إلى انتمائه للحزب الشيوعي وسجنه وإهانته وتعرضه للتعذيب بسبب هذا الانتماء، ثم خروجه من السجن وهروبه متخفياً إلى لبنان، ثم سفره إلى موسكو وإقامته فيها. في الكتاب أيضاً حديث أجراه الكاتب مع البياتي عام 1958 في القاهرة، أيام الوحدة العربية بين مصر وسوريا.
يتضمن الكتاب في نهاية صفحاته صورا له في مناسبات مختلفة، كما يتضمن صوراً لرسائل كتبها البياتي بخط يده.
كان الشاعر البيّاتي "قطاراً لا يقف في المدن المحطات طويلاً، تنقّل مسكوناً بالمرارة من بلد إلى بلد ومن مقهى إلى آخر "حادياً الثوار، وجياع الأرض، وفاضحاً الظلام، مدُيناً، في كل مدينة، حكم المخابرات وزنازين السجون، محلقاً أبداً بين غيومه الذاتية، وفارداً أجنحة أيامه كلها على بساط الشعر".
لمحة عامة عن حياة الشاعر الكبير البياتي، صاحب الشخصية الريادية التي "لعبت دورا في النضال، من خلال الكلمة والانتماء".
