مع ظهور الإسلام في القرن السابع الميلادي نشأت الدولة العربية الإسلامية التي امتدت رقعتها إمتداداً عظيماً في العالم القديم، رافق ذلك النهضة الفكرية والحضارية الكبرى التي صاحبت إزدهار الدولة العربية الإسلامية منذ مطلع القرن التاسع الميلادي إلى القرن السادس عشر الميلادي وخلال تلك المدة ظهراً العديد من المفكرين الجغرافيين الذين أسهموا في وضع اسس علم الخرائط العربية الإسلامية ويعد الإدريسي من أشهر جغرافي الإسلام وتكمن شهرته في رسمه لخارطة العالم فبالرغم من كونه يتبع المدرسة الإقليمية ذاتها التي ينسب إليها الجغرافيون العرب المسلمون إلا أن خرائطه تختلف كلياً عن خرائط (أطلس الإسلام)، فهي تلتزم بمقياس الرسم وبتحديد مواقع خطوط الطول ودوائر العرض كما تلتزم بالشكل الحقيقي للمنطقة.
لذلك، عدت فترته قمة ما بلغته الخرائط العربية من تطور ومع أن الإدريسي قد حذا حذو بطليموس في مواضع كثيرة، إلا أنه يعد مجدداً ومتفوقاً عليه في جوانب عديدة.
وتبعاً لاثر خرائط الإدريسي في تطور علم الخرائط خلال العصور الوسطى فقد ظهرت أهمية تحقيق تلك الخرائط وكشفها للعالم لكي يدرك الجميع ما وصل إليه العرب المسلمون من تطور في علم الخرائط في فترة سادا الظلام والجهل في أوروبا.
من هذا المنطلق، فقد عمل عدداً من الباحثين بتحقيق تلك الخرائط ومنهم المستشرق ألماني (كونراد ملر) الذي عمل سنة 1931 على تحقيق خارطة العالم للإدريسي، وهي خارطة شاملة للعالم عمل الإدريسي على تجزئتها إلى سبعون جزءاً تمثل سبعون خارطة وضعها في كتاب واحد أطلق عليه (نزهة المشتاق في الإختراق الآفاق).
وقد تمكن المستشرق ملر من الحصول على النسخ الأصلية من خرائط الإدريسي كاملة فجمع تلك الخرائط لتشكل لديه خارطة واحدة، وهي خارطة العالم الإدريسي.
وقد تمكن المؤلف من الحصول على خارطة العالم للإدريسي التي قام المستشرق ملر من تحقيقها، كما تمكن من الحصول على خارطة العالم للإدريسي الموجودة، في موقع أكسفورد بورك، مكتبة بودليايان؛ وبإستخدام التقنيات والبرمجيات الحديثة أعاد تجزئة الخرائط السبعون التي قام ملر بتجميعها لتظهر سبعون خارطة إقليمية تمثل خرائط أطلس العالم للشريف الإدريسي.
