لعل خير وصف لرواية "البيت الأخضر" للكاتب البيروني ماريو بارغاس يوسا هو أنها رواية عن "الأغوارنيون" / الهنود الحمر الأميركيون الذين عاشوا على ضفاف الأمازون في المنطقة التي يمر فيها نهر سانتياغو، حيث ينفتح المشهد الروائي على مجموعة من البشر "الأغوارنيون" الذين يركبون زورق ويحاولون الوصول إلى الشاطئ ، يخاف منهم السكان الأصليون للجزيرة، ويكون في انتظارهم "الأم أنخليكا" و "الأم باترونينيو" الراهبتان اللتان كانتا تصليان من أجل خطايا العالم، بدأتا تكلمان الأغواربونيون ينعومة، عن طريق رسم أشكال وحركات سوق يفهمهما هؤلاء القادمون بوجودهم المتخشبة والقاسية ولغتهم الوثنية، وأجسادهم العارية "وزعت الأم الهدايا على الأغوارينيين الذبن أخذوها دون أن يبدأوا أيّ مظهر من مظاهر الحماس، لكن فيما بعد وحين بدأت الأمّان والحراس تتناول قطع السمك التي انتزعوها بأيديهم، فتح الرجلان كيسيهما دون أن يتبادلا النظر ...".
تتشابك الأحداث في هذه الرواية لتفصح عن معنى البيت الأخضر بأنه بيت للدعارة لُون باللون الأخضر، ويقوم بمحاربة من فيه الكهان ومنهم "غارسيا" إلى جانب غيره من أولياء الأمور الأخلاقية، ويبرر الكاتب وجوده بأنه جاء نتيجة الفقر والتشرد الذي يعانيه السكان والذي استغله القائمون على الجزيرة إلى جانب التجارة بالبشر والتهريب للبضائع المسروقة ...
من أجواء الرواية نقرأ:
" ... ما من شيء إلا وكان في تشيكايس، إلا الأغوارونيون، يضحك "الغليظ" لماذا لا يأخذونهم على حين غرّة؟ لهثت الأم أنخليكا، ربما لم تكوني تعرفينهم، اينها الأم؟ اهتزت منفضة ريش ذقنها البيضاء بنعومة، لقد كانوا يخشون المسيحيين ويختبئون منهم، لا أحد يحلم بأن يعودوا، وما داموا موجودين هنا لن يروا حتى غبارهم (...)".
