هذا كتاب جامع لذكر الجن وأخبارهم وما يتعلق بأحكامهم وأثارهم. وكان السبب، كما يقول المصنف الإمام بدر الدين، محمد بن عبد الله الشيلي، في تصنيفه ونسخه على المنوال مذاكرة وقعت في مسألة نكاح الجن وإمكانه ووقوعه، فرأى بحثها في هذا الكتاب بعد تحديده مقدمات الأولى: تقرير وجود الجن خلافاً لكثير من الفلاسفة وجماهير القدرية وكافة الزنادقة وغيرهم وفساد قول من أنكر وجودهم، الثانية: تقرير أن لهم أجساماً شخصية رقيقة أو كثيفة تتطور وتتشكل صور شتى، ليمكن الو قاع ويتأتى. الثالثة: بيان تكليفهم خلافاً للمشوية ذلك لأن من جوز النكاح بين الإنس والجن أما أن يشترط في نسائهم الإيمان أو أن يكنّ من أهل الكتاب لأن ما اشترط في حل النساء الآدميات أولى أن يشترط في الجنيات لأن القائل بجواز نكاحهم لا يفرق .
ويتفرع من ذلك بعثة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إليهم وقبل بعثته إليهم بماذا كانوا متكلفين؟! هب بعث إليهم نبي منهم، أو كان فيهم نذر منهم ليسوا رسلاً عن الله تعالى ولكن بثهم الله تعالى في الأرض فسمعوا كرم رسل الله عز وجل الدين من بني آدم وعادوا إلى قومهم من الجن فأنذروهم، وهذا قول جماهير العلماء من السلف والخلف، وهذا كما سمع النفر من الجن القرآن من النبي صلى اله عليه وسلم فقالوا: أنا سمعنا كتاباً أنزل من بعد موسى، وكان هذا قبل دعوة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إياهم واجتماعهم به.
وقد جعل المصنف يفصل في أمور كثيرة تتعلق بالجن وأحوالهم وأخبارهم بحيث تم له تصنيف هذا الكتاب بأبواب بلغت الأربعين بعد المائة نذكر منها: في بيان إثبات الجن والخلاف فيه، في ابتداء خلق الجن، في بيان مساكن الجن، في بيان القرين من الجن، فيما يمنع الجن من تناول طعام الإنس وشرابهم، في أن الجن يتناكحون ويتناسلون، في بيان تعرض الجن لنساء الإنس، في بيان حكم وطئ الجني الإنسية أيوهب عليها الغسل أم لا؟ في خوف الجن من الإنس، في تسخير الجن للإنس، وطاعتهم لهم، فيما يعتصم به من الجن ويستدفع به شرهم، في بيان صراع الجن للإنس، في دخول الجن في بدن المصروع، في كحم معالجة المصروع في التخدير من فتن الشيطان ومكايده.
