يقول الشّبليّ في بداية كتابه إنّ ما دفعه إلى تصنيفه كانت "مذاكرة وقعتْ في مسألة نكاح الجنّ وإمكانه ووُقوعه، وضاق المجلسُ عن تقريرها، وتحقيق المباحث فيها وتحريرها".
وهكذا انتهى به الأمر إلى أن صنّف كتاباً "جامعاً لذكر الجنّ وأخبارهم وما يتعلّق بأحكامهم وآثارهم"، استهلّه ببعض المقدّمات، وأردفها بمائة وأربعين باباً، ضمّنها كلَّ ما حصل عليه من معلومات وآراء وأحكام وقصص وحكايات عن الجنّ والشياطين، وزادَ عددُ مصادره على التّسعين، ولقد أفرد الشّبليّ قائمة بهذه المصادر فوجدت في إحدى المخطوطات، بالإضافة إلى إستقصاء الإقتباسات الّتي وردت في صلب الكتاب.
يوجد لكتاب آكام المرجان في أحكام الجانّ ما يُناهز الخمسين مخطوطةً منتشرة في مكتبات مختلفة، أهمَّها أربع مخطوطات تنتمي إلى سُلالتَيْن، مخطوطة آيا صوفيا هي الأفضل، مخطوطة تشستربيتي هي الأقدم، المخطوطة الثّالثة هي مخطوطة بَغْدَتْلِي وَهْبي أَفَنْدِي، وأما المخطوطة الأكمل فهي مخطوطة فاضل أحمد باشا.
بالإضافة إلى هذه المخطوطات الأربع، تمّت مقابلة النصّ أحياناً مع مخطوطة فاتح 2803، الموجودة في مكتبة السّليمانيّة، في إستنبول، وكذلك مخطوطة الأزهر الشريف.
إنّ آكام المرجان في أحكام الجانّ هو أوّل دراسة وافية لأخبار الجانّ وأحكامها في الإسلام، وقد تصدّى لهذه المهمّة الصّعبة قاضٍ ذو هِمّة علميّة عالية، هو القاضي بدر الدّين محمّد بن عبد الله الشّبليّ، وقد استقى الشّبليّ في جمع معلوماته عن الجانّ من القرآن الكريم والسّنّة النّبويّة وكلّ ما ورد في كتب علماء المسلمين المرموقين مّمن سبقه وعاصره.
فهذا كتابٌ جامعٌ لذكْرِ الجنِّ وأخبارهم، وما يتعلَّقُ بأحكامهم وآثارهم، وكان السبب في تصنيفه، ونسجه على هذا المنوال الغريب وترصيفه، مذاكرةً وقعت في مسألة، نكاح الجنِّ وإمكانه ووقوعه، وضاقَ المجلسُ عن تقريرها، وتحقيق المباحث فيها وتحريرها، ثم رأيتُ أن هذه المسألة تقتضي تقرير مقدمات: الأولى: تقريرُ وجود الجنِّ، الثانية: تقرير أنَّ لهم أجساماً مُشخصة، رقيقةً أو كثيفةً، تتطور وتتشكل في صورٍ شتى، الثالثة: بيان تكليفهم، خلافاً للحشوية، وذلك لأنَّ من جوز النكاح بين الإنس والجنِّ، إما أن يشترط في نسائهم الإميان، أو أن يكن من أهل الكتاب.
