عندما نقرأ التسجيل التاريخي الدقيق الذي قام به هنري لورنس في هذا المجلد الجديد (1947- 1967)، فسوف يتأكد لنا أن ثقافة الحرب قد أصبحت بمثابة طبيعة ثانية لمنطقة الشرق الأدنى: فإسرائيل التي أعلنت إستقلالها للتوِّ، إنما تضطر إلى مواجهة حرب مكشوفة؛ وفي عام 1956، بينما كانت المشكلة التي يتعين على الأوربيين حلها هي الرد على عبد الناصر بعد تأميم قناة السويس، تنضم إسرائيل إلى تحالف غريب بين إنجلترا وفرنسا؛ وفي عام 1967، وبما أنه لا يبدو أن هناك أى حدود ملموسة وبما أن الأمريكيين والسوفيت يبدون عاجزين عن تهدئة اللعبة بدلاً من الأوربيين ومحلهم، أو قليلي الرغبة في ذلك، ترى إسرائيل أن عليها مهاجمة جيرانها من جديد. وفي كل حرب، تزداد إسرائيل قوة، وفي كل مرة، تزداد الكراهية عمقاً جَراَّء طعن الكرامة... وليس دور التأريخ أن يحكم لأحد أطراف هذا النزاع المتواصل- ثم إن الأطراف تتحمل جانباً لا بأس به من المسئولية عن الأخطاء- إلاَّ أن بوسعه أن يقدم مساهمة لا بديل عنها بتوضيحه كيف وصلنا إلى ما وصلنا إليه... مسألة فلسطين، مشروع إستثنائي لا مثيل له بأى لغة.
