بحسب المؤلف،فانه في أوائل القرن الحادي والعشرين ،بدأت دورة هائلة من عدم الاستقرار في الشرق الأوسط والتي بدأت في العام 2003 وتسارعت منذ عام 2011 وأخذت منحنى يتسم بالخطورة،حيث يخامرنا الانطباع أننا في وضع جديد على الشرق الأوسط ...ولكن الحقيقة ،أن الشرق الأوسط قد عرف على مدار القرن التاسع عشر ،ما سمى آنذاك بالأزمات الشرقية. فضمن لعبة تدخلات وتورطات فيما بين فاعلين محليين وإقليميين ودوليين،وصلت إلى درجة بات من المتعذر معها معرفة من يتلاعب بالآخر ،عبرت هذه الأزمات عن تعارض مصالح وعن إسقاطات ثقافية متناقضة،تخص الأوروبيين تجاه البلدان المسماة بالشرقية مثلما تخص هذه البلدان الأخيرة تجاه ما يسمى بالعالم المتحضر. وقد جابهت الدول عنفا بلغ أحيانا أقصى مدى له،فتعاملت معه تحت وطأة الضرورة الملحة بحلول سياسية عرجاء في أغلب الأحوال. ويعيد هنرى لورانس النظر فى جذور هذه المسألة الشرقية متعددة الجوانب والمرتبطة بالاعادات المتعاقبة لصوغ الدولة العثمانية و"اللعبة الكبرى" التى دارت المواجهات فيها بين روسيا وبريطانيا العظمى،فى الساحة الآسيوية،بين أواخر القرن الثامن عشر وعام 1914. هنرى لورنس،المؤرخ الفرنسى ،له عدد كبير من الأعمال المؤرخة لحقبات هامة في التاريخ العربى ،وهو مؤلف الكتاب الموسوعي "مسألة فلسطين"فى عشرة أجزاء ،"الأصول الفكرية للحملة الفرنسية على مصر...الاستشراق المتأسلم فى فرنسا (1698-1798)"،"بونابرت والاسلام.بونابرت والدولة اليهودية"،"المشرق العربى فى الزمن الامريكى :زمن حرب الخليج الى حرب العراق"و "أوروبا والعالم الاسلامى تاريخ بلا أساطير" المترجم الكبير بشير السباعي والذي رحل عن عالمنا مؤخرا،قدم للمكتبة العربية عددا كبيرا من أهم الكتب ،نذكر منها :"مسألة فلسطين"،"مصر في الخطاب الامريكى"،"أوروبا وتدمير الآخر .الهنود الحمر والأتراك والبوسنيون"،"الديموقراطية والدولة فى العالم العربى"،"الكاتب والسلطة"،"حاله جرامشى"،"الهوية والحداثة-الرحالة المصريون فى اليابان"،"النظرية الماركسية فى الدولة" و"حول الدين والعلمانية".
