ابن الفارض (و. 1181 - ت. 1235)، هو حفص وأبو القاسم عمر بن أبي الحسن علي بن المرشد بن علي ، ويعرف بكنية ابن الفارض، وذلك راجع إلى أن أباه كان يعمل فارضا. والفارض ، هو الذي كان يثب الفروض للنساء على الرجال من بين يدي الحكام، ثم ولي نيابة الحكم. وكان من شعراء العصر العباسي المتصوفين.
ولد ابن الفارض في الربع الاخير من القرن السادس والثلث الاول من القرن السابع الهجري، فقد ولد ونشأ وترعرع، وشارك في الحياتين الأدبية والروحية في عصر له أهميته من النواحي السياسية، الحربية، العلمية، الأدبية، الدينية، والتصوفية للحياة المصرية الإسلامية. اشتغل بفقه الشافعية وأخذ الحديث عن [ابن عساكر]، وأخذ عنه الحافظ المنذري وغيره.
كان ابن الفارض شاعر متصوف، يلقب بسلطان العاشقين ، في شعره فلسفة تتصل بما يسمى (وحدة الوجود).
قضى ابن الفارض أول حياتته سالكا طريق التصوف والتجريد ، سائحا في وادي المستضعفين في جبل المقطم بمصر ، ثم رحل بعد ذلك إلى مكة ، وأقام بها خمسة عشر سنة بين السياحة في الأودية ، وبين الطواف حول الحرم الشريف ، وبين التعبد والتهجد في البقاع المقدسة من أرض الحجاز ، آخذا نفسه فيما بين هذا كله بألوان من الرياضات والمجاهدات. صاغت هذه الرياضات الروحية ابن الفارض صياتغة خلقية خاصة ، ووجهت سلوكه في حياته الفردية والاجتماعية وجهة سامية.
فالنسك والعفة وصوم النهار واحياء الليل ، والتتورع والزهد كل ذلك جعله يخلص نفسه من حياتها المادية ، مطئمنا الى البهجة العظمى ، وهي الظفر بالقرب والوصول والأنس من محبوبه الاسمى. ولم يكن ابن الفارض الصوفي الذي قضى عمره في تحقيق تلك البهجة ، واقفا في رياضته الروحية عند هذا الحد ن انما كان ذاهبا فيها الى أبعد الحدود.
