فقد أصبحت وسائل الإعلام في المجتمعات الديمقراطية حول العالم تؤدي وظيفة إضافية كحراس أو حماة يراقبون نشاطات السلطتين السياسية والقضائية في الحكومة، وحافظت وسائل الإعلام على بقاء الديمقراطيات ونجاحها بإعطاء صوت لمن ليس لهم صوت وضمان عدم تمكن الأغلبية الحاكمة من الدهس على حقوق الأقلية وقد قال الكاتب الأمريكي الساخر فينلي بيتردان في القرن التاسع عشر إن مهمة الصحفي هي "مواساة المصاب وتعذيب المرتاح" ولكن دور الصحافة الرئيسي في المجتمعات الحرة ظل هو نفسه ولم يتغير منذ أجيال، فالهدف الأساسي للصحافة هو تزويد المواطنين بالمعلومات الدقيقة والموثقة التي يحتاجون إليها للعب دورهم في مجتمع حر.
من هنا جاءت فكرة الكتاب حيث نتناول فيه تعريف وأهمية الصحافة ودور الصحفي الناجح في الارتقاء بمهنة الصحافة كذلك إلقاء الضوء على فن التحرير الصحفي من أخبار صحفية أو قصة خبرية أو مقال موضحين أنواع كل منهم وأهمية كل منهم على حدة.
