إن ليدل هارت هو النبي المعترف به عالمياً للحرب الميكانيكية أو الحرب الخاطفة وبطل استراتيجية التقرب غير المباشر، وحرب الحركة، وهو أحد أعظم الكتاب العسكريين في القرن العشرين على الإطلاق، وأغزرهم إنتاجاُ وأعمقهم فكراً. وقد رافق تطور الأسلحة الحديثة، وشهد نتائج استخدامها ووقف محللاً لأحداثها، متوقعاً تطوراتها، لا في المجال التكتيكي والعملياتي فقط وإنما تجاوزها إلى أفق الاستراتيجية الرحب.
وتشكل الدراسة الحالية المحاولة الأولى لوضع فكر ليدل هارت العسكري في المنظور الملائم عن طريق تقصي أصول وتطور أفكاره الأساسية طوال حياته العملية كلها. وثمة هدف هام آخر لهذه الدراسة هو البرهنة على أن إسهام ليدل هارت في فهم مشكلات الحرب والسلام المعاصرة لم يتوقف بصورة مباغتة في العام 1940 أو العام 1945. ذلك لأنه على النقيض-كان من بين أكثر المحللين الأوائل للطبيعة المحتملة للحرب والصراع في العصر النووي قدرة على التنبؤ.
