يتمحور هذا الكتاب حول (الكورد) كموضوع رئيسي يعتني بتفاصيل الجغرافية الطبيعية والبشرية لإقليم الجزيرة وشهرزور في صدر الإسلام (16-132ه / 637-749م) ، كما ويُعتبر الكتاب من المحاولات المبكرة للتعريف بالقبائل والطوائف الكوردية التي سكنت في تلك المنطقة والتي كانت المعلومات عنها مبعثرة في ثنايا المصادر التاريخية، كما وعكس هذا العمل صورة واضحة عن الأوضاع السياسية والدينية للكورد قبل مجيء الفاتحين المسلمين إلى المنطقة المذكورة فضلاً عن تقديم تصور عن الإتصال المبكر للكورد بالإسلام، وعن موقفهم من الفتح الإسلامي، والأحداث التي ساهموا فيها خلال العهد الأموي والموقف إزاء الدعوة العباسية.
تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب من أهمية الموقع الإستراتيجي لإقليم الجزيرة وتأثيره الكبير على مختلف العناصر من سكانه، وبالأخص الكرْد الذين عاشوا فيه منذ عصور موغلة في القدم، هذا من جهة، ومن جهة أخرى، كون ذلك الإقليم كان مسرحاً للصراع الدائر بين الفرس والروم وما ترتب على ذلك الصراع من آثار انسحبت على واقع الشعب الكردي، وما قام به من دور فاعل وهام شكّل حاجزاً قوياً لصد هجمات وغارات الفرس والروم على الإقليم، والتصدي للغزوات التي تعرض لها؛ وفيما يتعلق بإدخال شهرزور في نطاق البحث، تشير المؤلفة، "يعود أساساً إلى أنها ضمت إلى الموصل بعد الفتح الإسلامي وبذلك تدخل ضمن إطار الجزيرة، وتعد جزءاً منها في تلك الحقبة الزمنية التي يمثلها البحث ... ورغبتي العارمة في الوقوف على الكُرد في الجزيرة وشهرزور ...".
