و الدليل هو في شكل موسوعة من أجزاء متعددة تتناول الحياة الاجتماعية و الاقتصادية للسكان ووصفاً للمنطقة و قبائلها و إماراتها و مشيخاتها وإحصائيات متنوعة.

وضع كتاب "دليل الخليج" من قبل المسؤولين البريطانيين في الخليج منذ أوائل القرن العشرين بما يخدم مصالحهم، وقد قام المعتمد البريطاني في الخليج في ذلك الوقت السيد ج. لوريمر بترتيب وصياغة مواد الكتاب ونشره.
بالرغم من أن الكتاب كُتب وعبر عن وجهة النظر البريطانية ووردت فيه بعض الآراء والمعلومات التي لا يتفق عليها البعض إلا أنه يظل من أهم الكتب التي تناولت منطقة الخليج من حيث التاريخ والجغرافيا وركز على فترة هامة تميزت بشح المعلومات وندرتها، لذا فقد اكتسب هذا الكتاب تلك الميزة وجعلته مرجعاً أساسياً للكثير من الباحثين والمهتمين بأمور الخليج وبلدانه.
وقد رأينا أن نعد هذا الكتاب، دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة في دليل الخليج، نظراً لأهمية المعلومات الواردة به - رغم وجود مغالطات تاريخية - إلا أنها لا تُنقص كثيراً من أهمية الكتاب.
وقد أورد الكتاب تاريخ الإمارات منذ عام 1750 وما بعدها وبدايات التواجد البريطاني والمعاهدات التي أبرمتها مع الإمارات، وكذلك أورد الكتاب جغرافية الإمارات ومواردها والغوص وتجارة اللؤلؤ وصناعة المراكب الشراعية وغيرها.
