في هذه الرواية، حكايات عنيدة لحالمين يشتّقون من تاريخ أوجاعهم مَسرّات بطعم الطفولة، وهم يروون لحظات ما قبل النهايات. نسمع نحيب أحلامهم كشهقات المستغيث من طوفان عظيم يغمر الأمكنة والأزمنة، لتولد لهم مواقيتُ جديدة للحُلم والحُبّ والأمل تتحدّى حصار الخيبات والنكسات.
في "الطُوفَان الثاني" يواصل الروائي العراقي فاتح عبد السلام، الماكثُ الأبديّ في كنف الجسد. كما يصفُه أكثر من ناقد، مشروعهُ السرديَّ منذ روايتيه "عندما يسخن ظهرُ الحوت - 1993" و"اكتشاف زقَورة - 2000" في البحث عن ذلك المعادل المستحيل لانهيارات الحروب. بؤرة روائيّة تنبض تحت أنساق من رماد ماكرٍ، يُغطّي ذات الأرض التي نحت فيها الطُوفانُ الأوّل أصوات الملاحم والأساطير وأنفاس المُدن المُضيئة.
هنا "الطُوفَان الثاني" خط شروع متكسّر لحياة حالمة، لا يقهرها تنّين النار، حياة تأبى إلاّ أنْ ترسم ملامحَ الوجه الحتميّ الآخر من الحرب، أية حرب.
من أجواء الرواية نقرأ: "ماذا كان يمتلك أولئك الجنود العراقيون من نحيلي الأجساد الذين شربت الشمس حدقات عيونهم من دون أن تكسر تلك النظرات العميقة الحادة؟ وانسفحت أيام الأسبوع الثاني مع دماء كثيرة. وفي الأسبوع الثالث كانت القوات الأمريكية تتدفّق في محيط بغداد وصحاري الجنوب. كان الطُّوفَان العظيم من الجنود والنيران يغطي أغلب مساحة البلد. كان كمال يراقب الأخبار دقيقةً بدقيقة، وكان يقول لأصدقائه إنَّ رأسه وأذنيه وعينيه صاروا مثل ستالايت دوّار لا يستقر على اتجاه واحد. ولا يزال ذلك السؤال المريب يشتعل في داخله "وماذا بعد احتلال العراق؟ هل سيحتلون دولاً أخرى؟".
