من بقايا الحروب يأتي بطل الرواية ليبدأ حياته من حيث انتهى جسداً متفسّخاً على سرير في غرفة منسيّة، عبر رحلة مضنية من الدم والجوع والكلام المكتوم، يستعيدها الراوي بانورامياً في تلاقح مع مناخات سومر وبابل وآشور وأكّد، فيكون متماهياً مع الزقورة التي بناها العراقي القديم ليرتقي بفكرة العبادة إلى أعلى، حيث السموّ... حيث السماء؛ غير أنها زقورة مجهولة يكتشفها الروائي ويسمو من خلالها بوجود هذا الشاهد.
