تعددت اتجاهات دراسة الأدب العربي القديم ونقده في العصر الحاضر بحسب اختلاف الأسس المعتمدة في كل اتجاه، أو بحسب وثاقة صلاتها بالمعارف الأخرى كالفلسفة والتاريخ والاجتماع والعقائد وغيرها من العلوم الإنسانية والتجريبية التي قدمت تفسيرات موضوعيه لمجمل إشكال السلوك الانساني.
وعلى الرغم من أن هذه المعارف أو العلوم رفدت النقد بمقومات مهمة أعانت على تشخيص جوانب بارزة في سيرورة الإبداع وتكوين عناصره في النص الأدبي، إلا أن الاستعانة بها لم تكد تستوفي وسائل الكشف عن السمات الفنية الفارقة له عن غيره من ضروب الكلام، أي العناصر التي تجعل من الكلام المجرد نصاً أدبياً متميزاً في بنائه ودلالته وتأثيره في المتلقي بنحو عام. ومن هنا برز اتجاه حديث في دراسة الأدب ونقده اعتمد بشكل رئيسِ على رصد العلاقات التركيبية، واستقراء النظم الأسلوبية في النصوص الأدبية بنحو جعله أكثر قرباً من جوهر الأدب الذي هو نشاط أنساني قوامه اللغة، ومن ثم لا تقاس مستويات الإبداع فيه قياساً موضوعياً إلا بمقدار ما تضمنته من سمات الجدة والأصالة والابتكار في بناء علاقات أسلوبية، أو تراكيب فنية، لا تخرج عما تسمح به قوانين اللغة من أحكام الخطأ والصواب، ولكنها متميزة عن المألوف المستقيم بما تقدمت الإشارة إليه من علامات الجدة والأصالة والابتكار. وكان من ضمن مسارات هذا الاتجاه الجديد تركيز العناية على بناء النص"حيث تتم دراسة المكونات الأساسية للنص في شروط تبلورها التاريخية، وتطرح الأسئلة المرتبطة بالعلاقة بين الإبداع الفردي والتطور التاريخي للبنى ومكوناتها".(1) وباعتماد هذا الأسلوب في قراءة النصوص القديمة وتصنيفها قبل التعمّق في دراستها من الناحية الفنية رُصدت وحدات دلالية تقليدية لها إطارات تركيبية متوارثة وجدت في قرائح الأدباء على مر الزمن طاقات إبداعية أعادت بناءها بأساليب تعبيرية متميزة أكسبتها غنى في المعنى وسعة في الدلالة.
