يتألف هذا الكتاب من تمهيد وثلاثة فصول؛ ناقش الباحث في التمهيد رؤية النقد العربي قديماً وحديثاً للمطولات، وتحديدات العرب للقصيدة والقطعة وأشهر من عرف بطول النفس الشعري.
كما تضمن مناقشة آراء النقاد والمحدثين وهم يخلطون بين مصطلحي المطولة والقصيدة الطويلة، ولكنهم تطرفوا أحياناً وهم يحاولون تطبيق آراء النقاد الغربيين بالقصيدة الطويلة عندهم، على المطولات العربية من حيث البنية المعمارية والتلوينات الهندسية والإيقاعية التي اعتمدها الشعراء المعاصرون.
ويتناول الفصل الأول البنيات الإيقاعية والموسيقية في المطولات الشعرية، أما الفصل الثاني فقد عني بدراسة البنيات التركيبية في المطولات من خلال ثلاثة مباحث هي: الرتبة وخصائص الجملة، والحذف، وحركة الزمن، أما الفصل الثالث: فقد تناول البنيات الدلالية في المطولات الشعرية عبر أربعة محاور هي: الدلالة واللغة الشعرية، والعنوان، والأعلام والتضمين، والصورة الشعرية.
