الكنعانيون هم أول شعب سكن في فلسطين، وهم قوم من العرب، وبالتالي كانت فلسطين عربية، فالعرب هم أول من نزل فلسطين قبل تاريخها المدوّن وقد قال ابن خلدون: "أول ملك في فلسطين، في فجر التاريخ، كان للعرب… وفلسطين كسائر البقاع العربية المجاورة لها تعرضت لاحتلالات من قبل شعوب مجاربة، طارئة، مكثت على أرض فلسطين فترات زمنية، قصرت أو طالت.. غير أنها كانت دائماً طارئة... وظلت فلسطين خلالها موسومة بالسمة العربية منذ الموجة المعروفة باسم "الآمورية-الكنعانية" التي تعاظم أمرها قبل عام 2500 ق.م حيث نزل الأموريون داخل بلاد الشام وجنوبها الشرقي "شرقي الأردن". واستوطن الكنعانيون ساحلها وجنوبها الغربي "فلسطين"، وأنشأوا مدناً وأطلقوا عليها أسماء مرتبطة بهم وبلغتهم.
وعلى مرور الزمن طرأ تغيير على هذه الأسماء إلا أن من هذه المدن الكنعانية ما زال يحمل نفس الاسم حتى اليوم، ومنها ما جرى عليه تحريف بسيط مثل مدينة (أريحا): وهذه كلمة سريانية بمعنى "الرائحة" أو "الأريح"، و"أنشودة" و"بئر السبع" و"تبرق" بمعنى: ابن البرق و"بيت تفوّح" يعني بيت التفاح، و"بيت لحم" و"تعنّك" و"جَدبرة" و"جمزو" و"حلحول" و"رامة" و"طاماس" و"عتليت" و"عكازعكو" و"غزة" و"يافا"… الخ. ومن المدن التي تغير اسمها أو حرّف تحريفاً ظاهراً، منها: "أبل بت معكة": وهي: "آبل القمح" من أعمال صفد، و"أرسوف" الواقعة شمالي يافا و"أشتاؤول" وتعرف اليوم باسم "إشوع"، و"اشتموع" وهي قرية "السموع" و"صديم" وهي قرية حطين... الخ.
هذا ويحاول العدوّ الصهيوني فرض أسماء بديلة للمدن والقرى، إلا أن سكان فلسطين الأصليين ظلوا يحافظون على أسماء بلدانهم، وإن طرأ شيء من تغيير في اسم القرية إن لجهة تغيّر في حركة الحرف، أو لجهة استبدال حرف بآخر، أو لجهة تقديم حرف أو تأخير آخر...
من هنا تبدو أهمية هذا المعجم الذي عني بتدوين أسماء المدن والقرى الفلسطينية وتفسير معانيها. وأما الهدف من هذا العمل كما يوضح المؤلف فهو التأكيد ومن خلال أسماء المدن الفلسطينية على أنها عربية سورية فلسطينية ولم تكن في يوم من الأيام يهودية "إسرائيلية"، وأن المحتل ومهما تمادى في سياسة الإبادة للشعب الفلسطيني وتدميره قراه، واستبدالها بقرى مستحدثة فإنه لن ينجح في ثني الشعب الفلسطيني عن استعادة أرضه وقريته التي سيظل اسمها العربي تردد الشفاه من جيل إلى جيل.
