"توقف المصعد عبد الطابق الثالث مباشرة. رآه وهو يسحب بدنه الثقيل كزحافة عريضة، ويتسلق الجدران بهدوء، ثم يتوقف عن الحركة. ويهمد في لحظة، لحظة لم يكترث لها، لم يتصورها، لم يحسب لها حساباً وجد نفسه في موقف حرج.. كيف حدث ذلك؟ لم هذه الساعة وهو ذاهب الآن لتوقيع شراء مصاعد جديدة؟!! وجد نفسه وسط مساحة صغيرة. تابوت.. هذا المصعد تابوت من حديد، صلب، ولا منفذ للهواء. هل فكر في ذلك من قبل؟ في مخاطر المصعد؟ في أنه سيموت في مصعد جلبه من بلاد بعيدة؟ من دون أن يعي ضرب الجرس.. لم يسمع حركة في الخارج.. أعلى رأسه. كان المصعد قد توقف بين الدور الثالث والرابع.. رأى الجدار صامتاً. لو تحرك المصعد قليلاً لكان هو الآن تحت المكيف يرشف الشاي، ويدخن ويداعب سكرتيرته الجميلة. ضغط الجرس أيضاً! لا أحد!.ز قد يكون مقطوعاً!.. لا أحد يسمع..".
