ومنذ خروج المرأة للعمل - نتيجة للتطورات الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والسياسية فى مراحل التطور تغير الفكر الاجتماعى وتغيرت النظرة الى المرأة حيث اتجه الفكر ليعالج قضايا المرأة بشكل أشمل وأكثر اتساعا واتضح من خلال الدراسات الخاصة بمساهمة المرأة فى التنمية أن الحاجة الى عمل المراة مسألة حتمية من أجل التطور والتقدم خاصة مع ارتفاع نسبة الاعالة فى المجتمع وتلبية لاحتياجات النسق اقتصادى واستجابة لمتطلبات التطور والتنمية . لقد اصبح على المرأة ان تساهم بجزء من الإعالة للاسرة فى مرحلة تاريخية محددة ثم وفقا للتطورات المعاصرة ظهر مفهوم " تانيث الأسرة وزاد عدد الأسر التى فى حاجة الى أن تعولها نساء ( النساء المسئولات عن أسر أو المرأة التى تعول ) وتعتبر السر التى تعولها نساء من اشد السر فقرا وأقلها قدرة على الوفاء بالحاجات الساسية لأعضائها . ويدور هذا الكتاب حول الإجابة عن سؤالين مهمين وهما هل هناك عوامل معيشة أدت زيادة ظاهرة المرأة المعيلة وكيف أدت هذه العوامل الى زيادة هذه الظاهرة على النحو الذى تراه الأن .
