يعرف "التصدع الاجتماعي" بأنه عملية تشكل لخطوط انقسام اجتماعية، ذات أساس بنيوي عميق، بين مختلف المجموعات الاجتماعية، وتعبر عن نفسها على مستويات الهوية والتنظيم الاجتماعي والسياسي. ويتخذ الكتاب "إسرائيل" كحالة للدراسة، حيث تكشف عن بنية تراتبية في نظام التصدع الاجتماعي، بحيث يحتل التصدع القائم بين العرب واليهود موقع الصدارة، يليه التصدع الديني الذي يقسم اليهود إلى متدينين وعلمانيين، والتصدع "الإثني" الناشئ عن الطبيعة الاستيطانية و"المهاجرية" لإسرائيل كما هي الحال في الانقسام بين اليهود الشرقيين والغربيين، والتصدع الطبقي.
ويؤكد الكتاب -من خلال الدراسة العلمية الموثقة- حضور التصدعات الاجتماعية المتعاظمة في تشكل النظام الحزبي. ويدل على ذلك، حدوث تحول من صيغة "الحزب المهيمن" (1948-1977) إلى صيغة التعددية الحزبية المفرطة (1977-2006) حيث تتزايد أهمية الانقسامات الاجتماعية في الساحة السياسية الحزبية.
يستنتج الكتاب أيضاً أن البنية الاجتماعية المجزأة تميل إلى تعميق الاستقطاب السياسي في المجتمع الإسرائيلي.
