هذه الدراسة موزعة في مقدمة وأربعة أقسام وملحق، في المقدمة حاولنا تحديد الحقبة التاريخية موضوع الدرس من الناحية السياسية والإجتماعية والفكرية، وبيَّنا نشوء النظام الديني - السياسي الذي برزت معه بوضوح قائل معالم الإسلام المستقيم وهوية الخصوم المسلمين وغير المسلمين الذين حاربهم تحت اسم الزندقة.
القسم الأول خصَّصناه لفرق التيار الروحي البابلي الذي عرف أتباعه ومن دخل في دينهم من المسلمين بإسم الزنادقة فحُرموا من الذمة وطوردوا، في القسم الثاني درسنا الجدل الكلامي بين التوحيد ومعارضيه وأوجه النشاط الفكري التي اعتبرت خروجاً عن الدين القويم كمعارضة القرآن الكريم ووضع الحديث والميول الثقافية الشعوبية.
أما الأعلام من المتكلمين والكتاب والشعراء، وهم كثير، ممن اشتبه بصحة عقيدتهم الدينية أو تعرَّضوا لملاحقة الإدارة العباسية بتهمة الإنحراف الديني فدرسنا سيرهم في القسم الثالث، موضوع القسم الرابع هو ظاهرة المجون، نشؤها وفلسفتها وأشهر ممثليها.
أما الملحق ففحصنا فيه بعض الروايات التي تفيد عن تغلغل الزندقة والمجوسية في بعض قبائل العرب وفي مكة قبل الإسلام وفي فجر الإسلام.
